What to Look for in a Weight Loss Program
Given the choices you see in weight loss programs, there are many questions you have consider before making the choice that’s right for you. Remember that whatever program you end up choosing, it’s important to consult a medical professional beforehand.
Radical changes to your diet or taking on an exercise regimen could have unforeseen consequences to your overall health.
Look for a weight loss program you can live with.
Programs can sometimes involve support groups or social interactions that you may find challenging. If you try to adopt a program that is going to make you uncomfortable sharing, even if its in the context of communal support, you may want to try something else.
Weigh-ins or similar settings that could discourage you may only result in your giving up on a routine. Some people need this sort of support; others could find it detrimental. Find your comfort level and look for a weight loss program that suits it.
Look for real foods in your diet.
Programs that rely solely on manufactured foods, or pre-packaged products, may appear to be an attractive choice. The simplicity of knowing that is all you have to eat can lure many dieters into a particular program. But you have to consider the reality of such a regime. Any serious effort at maintaining weight loss must involve real food in the real world.
A program that requires you to purchase years worth of their product are more about making money than helping you achieve a healthy lifestyle. Look for programs that involve healthy foods and realistic meals.
Diet pills don’t work.
Some may claim otherwise, but the vast majority of research indicates diet pill do not work. Often diet pills are marketing as part of an overall plan, or the fine print states that they work in conjunction with a reduced diet or exercise. In fact, they do virtually nothing alone. And some of these pills actually can pose a hazard, as in the case of diuretics.
These can lead to dehydration, which simply masks true weight loss. As diet pills do not require FDA approval, you are taking a risk in using any of them.
Healthy lifestyle choices.
Any weight loss program must encourage a healthy lifestyle. This can include regular exercise (critical to weight loss), stress management, counseling, and working on other factors that could be part of your decision to lose weight.
Identifying psychological or situational factors that can lead to overeating, or a negative body image are sometimes the key to engaging in a successful weight loss program.
