Each and every weight loss program involves the same basic tenets: a reduction of the intake of calories, and increasing the calories you burn through physical activity.

Different programs approach these concepts with different methods, but it comes down to the same result.  In fact, if you look at the daily intake of calories promoted by some of the most popular programs, such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins, South Beach or the Ornish program, you will they are all virtually the same.

Different roads, same goal

When you break down the various programs offered today, you will find they are not so different.  While the approach may vary, most will have common elements you can easily identify.  It all comes down to eating more sensible foods, typically higher in fiber, and lower in fat.

By choosing foods that make you feel full faster, and stress complex carbohydrates and fiber, such as vegetables, whole grains, and fruits, you can eat more while avoiding the high glycemic-index foods.

Programs such as the Mediterranean Diet, the Ornish Diet, the Zone, Weight Watchers, and Jenny Craig all lead to similar habits.  The only exception are the low-carb diets, which while effective for some are just as challenging to stick to as other weight-loss routines.

Look beyond the marketing

With so many weight loss programs and products on the market, advertising professionals are always looking for ways to re-brand and re-sell what is essentially the same product.

Knowing this as you wade into the catch-phrases and over-blow hype of the weight loss program market, you can more easily identify what will work for you.

It all hinges on retraining yourself to eat less and eat better.  All diets or programs work on reducing the intake of calories.  Others emphasize a workout or exercise regime.  In fact you need both of these components as part of any program you take on.

You can look at different programs and adapt what you like to your own.  There’s no reason you cannot create your own program of exercise and reduced caloric intake.

No instant solutions

You cannot look for a single, “magic” cure to weight loss.  The weight loss program you choose is secondary to the commitment you must make to losing the weight.  It’s hardly ever an easy task, but choosing the right program will increase your chances of success.

Avoid the fads, don’t listen to hype, make sensible choices, start exercising regularly, and find the program that fits best with your routine.

Take these simple steps and you will be on the path to changing your lifestyle and losing that weight – keeping it off!
